Longo trained as a neurology resident at the University of California, San Francisco, where he also completed a neurobiology fellowship. He joined his UCSF faculty, eventually serving as professor and vice-chairman of UCSF’s Department of Neurology. At Stanford University, Longo is chair of the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience. His interests include his translational research in neurodegenerative diseases, providing patient care at Stanford University’s Center for Memory Impairment, and mentoring medical students, residents, and other trainees.

Longo received the Beeson Fellowship in Aging Research from the American Federation for Aging Research, was the first recipient of the Melvin R. Goode Award for Excellence in Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery from the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, and is currently serving on the Advisory Board of the National Institutes of Health. serves as a member of About aging.

A collection of books and other materials related to memory and cognitive health will be on display in the lobby of the main building during Science and Technology Week.

Admission to all programs is free and open to all.

LALE contributes to the Los Altos Libraries in many ways.

LALE’s ongoing donation program:

• Annual Science and Technology Grants: Over the years, LALE has provided more than $350,000 to support high-tech library resources, and this program remains a staple.

• The Virginia Whipple Collection: A LALE grant enabled the purchase and maintenance of the complete set of The Great Courses, a collection of audio and video CDs.

• Innovation Fund: Local librarians and staff are looking for ways to better serve and better serve library patrons. LALE will provide seed money for pilot programs and special acquisitions.

Other regular LALE grants:

• Silicon Valley Reads: LALE has provided $30,000 in funding since 2013.

• Enhanced Classical Music: LALE has updated and expanded its classical music CD and library collections.

• Science & Technology Week: LALE continues to support this library program, now in its fourth year.

• New signage system: LALE has provided funding to make it easier for patrons to find themselves in the library.

• Laptops and iPads: LALE provided devices to major libraries and iPad tables and chairs to Woodland Branch.

• Mobile Libraries: LALE funded GoGoBiblio. This electric vehicle circulates in the area for those who have difficulty getting to major libraries, schools, farmers markets and community events.
