The University of Chicago invites community members to explore the fascinating world of science at its first annual South Side Science Festival.

The event brings together the South Side and University of Chicago communities for fun outdoor science exploration, inspiring interaction with faculty and student researchers, live experiments and demonstrations, food, and music. We welcome all ages. No prior registration is required.

The public can meet some of the best research scientists on the South Side. Talk to graduate students about why you chose science. Get your imagination going on the possibilities of STEM.

Among the activities is immunological engineer Aaron Esser Khan and his lab teaching how to compare the adhesive strength of gels, tapes and glues, and using an ambulatory to mimic the way the body recognizes vaccines. We show you how to build a cell. Molecular geneticist Jocelyn Malamy explains the amazing jellyfish anatomy and life cycle. Help synthetic chemist Bryan Dickinson extract DNA from strawberries and use candy to create a model of his DNA.

Visitors can also help chemist Dmitri Tarapin and his lab make ice cream with liquid nitrogen. Using a guitar he learns how an MRI works. Or you can discuss “the origin of it all” with Professor Angela Orint or Nobel laureate Jack Shostak, from the birth of the universe to the creation of the building blocks of life, to the evolution of animals and humans.

The first edition of the festival will take place on Saturday, September 17th from 11am to 6pm at the UChicago Science Quads at 5734 S. Ellis Ave. in Chicago. This place is easily accessible by CTA bus and Metra.
