Student Praise: On Thursday, TPS announced that Edison Preparatory High School students Moriah Malone and Udchuk John Okafor have won the College Board’s National African American Award.

This award is part of a series of College Board awards that recognize students from underrepresented communities.

To be eligible, sophomores and juniors must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, excel on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10, or have a score of 3 or higher on at least two Advanced Placement exams. Additionally, eligible students must attend a Black, Hispanic, Indigenous, and/or rural or small-town school.

Looking for Clara Barton: The Oklahoma Department of Education and the Oklahoma Department of Health have partnered to provide matching grants for school nurse salaries and benefits through the School Nurse Corps program.

School districts are eligible to receive up to $27,500 in matching funds for every 750 enrolled students, plus an additional $5,000 in reimbursements for new job stipends. Funds will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and must be used by June 30, 2023. Additional information is available online at sde.ok.gov/project724.

Charitable Donation: On August 25, CommunityCare donated a total of $20,000 to eight local school district foundations.

Recipients include the Tulsa School Foundation, Jenks Public Schools Foundation, Union School Education Foundation, Broken Arrow Public Schools Foundation, Bixby Educational Fund Foundation, Owasso Educational Foundation, Sand Springs Educational Foundation, and Sapalpa Public Schools Foundation.

COVID-19 in numbers: Several local school districts have released their latest COVID-19 case counts entering the Labor Day holidays.

As of Friday afternoon, Bartlesville Public Schools has reported two infections from employees and 30 from students.

Berry Hill reported seven cases throughout the district. The district does not distinguish between staff and students in reporting.

Collinsville Public Schools reported 11 staff and 29 student cases.

Skiatook Public School reported six cases in students and one in an employee.

Tulsa Public Schools reported 15 cases from employees and 55 from students. Sequoyah Elementary and McClure Elementary had the highest number of institutional-level cases, with 12 and 11, respectively.

The Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences reported four infections from employees and eight from students.

Glenpool Public Schools did not participate in Friday’s session.

Bixby, Broken Arrow, Catoosa, Jenks, Owasso, Sand Springs, Sapulpa, and Union have not released updated case numbers at this time.

School Board Calendar: School boards for Keystone, Lone Star, Sand Springs and Tulsa are scheduled to meet on Tuesday.

The Bixby Public Schools Board of Education is scheduled to meet on Thursday.
