Cumberland County residents prepare to ‘walk for education’

Cumberland – Cumberland County students are required to remove their walking shoes as the annual fundraiser returns.

Cumberland County Public Schools Foundation Inc. hosts the 21st Annual Walk for Education. Since its inception in 2001, the foundation has raised his $618,000 for teacher grants and senior scholarships.

The walk will take place at the Cumberland School on Friday 23rd September. Middle school and high school students participate by walking on the track around the soccer field. Elementary school students take turns walking around the building in each class and participating in various activities such as games, races, dancing and music.

where does the money go

Money raised with Walk for Education goes back to schools. The money will be used for grants to teachers who have classroom needs or wants that the school doesn’t cover.Last year they gave a teacher her $10,000 grant. The Cumberland County Public Schools Foundation also offers scholarships for seniors.

“Walk for Education, unlike other projects used to fund scholarships and teacher grants, gives every student in the county the opportunity to participate in the event, regardless of grade level from K to 12. “It comes with them,” said Bruce Robinson, president of the Cumberland County Public Schools Foundation.

Community members are also encouraged to participate. Over the years, many clubs, organizations and churches have come to raise funds and walk, according to Barbara Gamage, the foundation’s correspondence secretary.

“I’m happy to see people coming,” Gamage said. “I hope people will support our school and help teachers and seniors to provide more scholarships. increase.”

Next week students will be coming home from school and will receive a letter asking for sponsorship of the walk. Those wishing to contribute can sponsor local students or send donations to the Cumberland County Public Schools Foundation Inc. (PO Box 313, Cumberland, VA 23040).

“We have an anonymous donor who gives $1 each year for each student who attends school on walk days,” Robinson said. “They may be four years old today, but when they are 17 or when he is 18, there will be an opportunity to get rewarded for participating in an educational walk.”
