Michele Volpe has been appointed the new Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS). He served as CEO of Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC) for 23 years.

In her new role, each of Penn Medicine’s six hospital CEOs will report to Ms. Volpe, and she will be responsible for further enhancing operational efficiency and program integration across Lancaster’s sprawling more than 3,400-bed healthcare system. Responsible for a series of activities. , including her three hospitals in Philadelphia, from Pennsylvania to Princeton, New Jersey. Together, these hospitals treat more than 6.5 million outpatients and about 130,000 inpatients each year, including the delivery of her more than 18,000 babies.

During his tenure as CEO of Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Mr. Volpe oversaw significant projects including the opening of the Penn Medical School City Outpatient Facility and the relocation of the Penn Medical School Level 1 Trauma Center from the University of Pennsylvania Hospital to PPMC. A highly respected leader among the medical community, Mr. Volpe currently serves as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Hospital and Health Systems Association (HAP), which advocates for more than 240 hospitals in Pennsylvania. She has been a member of HAP’s Board of Directors since 2016 and served as Treasurer before becoming Chairman.

She will assume her new role effective September 1, 2022, succeeding Philip Ocala, who will soon assume her new role as Systems President of California-based City of Hope.
