Victoria invests in new center to support innovators in digital health

The Victorian government has invested A$2.4 million ($1.6 million) to establish a center to support innovators in digital health.

The Victorian Connected Health Innovation and Commercialization Center will support up to 500 local businesses each year by connecting them with healthcare professionals, investors and other innovators who can help them rapidly develop new digital health products.

It is funded through the state’s Australian Center for Medical Technology Manufacturing and the Biotechnology Fund, and is delivered by digital health accelerator ANDHealth.

Since launching services last February, Ambulance Tasmania has seen increased demand from people who dial triple zero but do not require emergency ambulance response.

Through this latest partnership, calls from patients who do not require urgent care will be routed to MED’s emergency specialists for direct evaluation. Medical advice, prescriptions, and emergency escalation assistance are provided as needed.

$1.5 million project to install new CT scanner in Torres Strait

The Queensland government has announced a A$2.14 million ($1.45 million) project to install a new CT scanner at Thursday Island Hospital early next year.

“We know how important it is for First Nations communities to get health care as close to home as possible. With this device installed, people living in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula regions will be able to have CT scans. We will no longer have to go to Cairns for this, Prime Minister Anastasia Paraszczuk said in a statement.

The CT scanner will be installed in the medical imaging department, which is being strengthened as part of the hospital’s ongoing redevelopment. Minister of Health and Emergency Services Yvette D’Ath said they are now procuring a scanner unit and a consulting team to operate it.
