Twena fashion designer Stephanie Crowchild is taking the Big Apple by storm.

Crowchild is in New York City for Fashion Week, and her work lit up social media on Friday when The Bay posted a video of her designs modeled by Alberta’s Ashley Callingbull.

Designer @steph_crowchild hails from Tuutina in the Treaty 7 area near Calgary, Alberta and creates bespoke items. Following the tradition of her ancestors, she uses HBC Point blankets. Head over to our story to see Stephanie’s debut at NYFW.

Crowchild posted the video to his TikTok account.

Blackfoot designer Ashley Wright joined the video, which featured Calling Bull wearing her jewelry, with a one-word comment: “Epic!”

In an August interview with CTV News reporter Stephanie Thomas, Crowchild discussed her inspiration. Her mother and aunt taught her how to sew and make jackets when she was 17. gave me Many of her contemporary designs pay homage to the styles her grandparents wore and are often statements against colonialism, she says.

“It’s beautiful to be indigenous and to wear indigenous clothing from what our ancestors wore,” Crowchild said.

Her goal is to create a fashion brand while increasing the visibility of indigenous clothing and art.

“I’m really proud because we’re bringing in more Indigenous representatives,” she said.
