Governor Ron DeSantis spoke about how important it is for parents to regain their rights in education, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve seen in the last few years how important policy is in our country, for better or for worse,” DeSantis said at a Heritage Foundation event in Orlando on Friday. There may not have been any areas where the state contrasted with some lockdown states. [bigger] than education during COVID. ”

At the event, Heritage’s “Education Freedom Report Card” was unveiled, ranking Florida as the freest state in the nation. (The Daily Signal is the news agency of The Heritage Foundation.)

“We are not going to let fear dictate policy,” he added. “We support the well-being of our children and make sure we are there to support families across Florida.”

The governor also noted that his plan to give parents more rights in their children’s education has led to conflict with left-wing groups. He highlighted his state’s commitment to transparency legislation.

The “Parental Rights in Education” Act was often called a “not gay” bill by critics and the corporate media.

“The purpose of our school system is not to indoctrinate children, but to educate them,” said DeSantis. “We will not distort American history in an attempt to advance the current ideological agenda.”

DeSantis also said his administration is placing increasing emphasis on educating American citizens.

“as [we] fight back against things like [critical race theory]…we put a new emphasis on American citizens and ensured that the kids who go to our schools understand what it means to be American,” said DeSantis.

After his speech, the Governor met with Heritage Foundation Chairman Kevin Roberts to discuss what makes Florida’s education policy one of the best in the nation.

Roberts noted that while Florida was the first to score on several different indicators of educational freedom, it lags other states in school choice. Roberts then asked DeSantis about his plans to strengthen school choice in the Sunshine State.

The governor has pointed to the teachers union as a negative influence in achieving better school choice policies in Florida, and his state has urged families to use state scholarship funds to support their children. He said he plans to reform the way children can choose where to send them to school.

“There are some innovation opportunities [scholarships] If it’s a parent-controlled account, it could be tuition, but it could also be tutoring or other services,” says DeSantis. “Parents can make many other choices to give their children as many opportunities as possible.”

According to the “Education Freedom Report Card,” Florida is the best state in the Union for protecting parental rights. Calling DeSantis “America’s Governor,” Roberts said the work Florida lawmakers were doing in education was “a lever to bring back schools for our children, parents, and families.”
