Martinsville, Virginia – Checking your mental health is just as important as getting your physical health checked regularly, doctors say. That’s why Martinsville City Public Schools is prioritizing student mental health in a new way by conducting mental health assessments.

School psychologist Dr. Travis Worell and his team of counselors conduct these assessments for K-12 students.

Assessment consists of asking students how they feel about such statements.

‘I hate school.’ ‘I’m scared of trying new things.’ ‘I feel fit.’ ‘I give up easily.’ explained Dr. Worrell.

The idea behind these screenings was born when school counselors sent questionnaires to their homes during the pandemic, which students began to fill out during remote learning.

“There were two or three students who not only were able to check the temperature of the residents, but also said they needed to speak to someone immediately. I wouldn’t have,” said Dr. Worrell.

He said Martinsville was the first city in the state to offer these mental health screenings, allowing school staff to support students and achieve better success in and out of the classroom, he argues. increase.

“We’re just trying to be proactive and proactive because we can’t afford to fall behind because of mental health. After the fact, sometimes it’s too late. We know conversations can save lives.”

Screening responses are confidential. Parents or students can also opt out of evaluations.
