Arizona State University announced the appointment of Sherine Gabriel, Ph.D., as University Professor of Health Outcomes and the Future of Medicine and Chair of ASU’s Health Outcomes Design Council.

Reporting directly to ASU President Michael Crow, Gabriel will be responsible for facilitating the continued evolution of ASU’s focus on integrated health and health outcomes.

As an epidemiologist and rheumatologist, Gabriel has dedicated his career to advancing innovative educational training and equitable health outcomes. She works closely with her team and collaborates with her academic partners to conduct research and develop new research to equip future health scientists and providers to increase health equity and improve health. Designed and implemented a teaching model.

She completed her medical training at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and was awarded the USask Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, the university’s highest honor. She completed a residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Rheumatology from the Mayo School of Medicine and Wellesley Hospital in Toronto. She holds a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Gabriel’s resume includes an extensive list of leadership positions in medicine and academia, including; Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Medical Group Professors, Deans, Distinguished University Professors and CEO Appointments. Most recently, Dr. James A. Campbell, M.D., President of Rush University and Chief Academic His Officer of the Rush University Health System. Rush University is Chicago’s nationally-ranked academic medical center and includes medical, nursing, health sciences, and graduate colleges. One of the hallmarks of his Gabriel time at Rush is that he founded the Rush BMO Institute for Health Equity. It currently coordinates health equity initiatives across all system hospitals in Rush.

With a long history of service to professional associations, governmental and non-governmental boards and committees, Gabriel is past president of the American College of Rheumatology, the world’s leading professional organization of rheumatologists and rheumatology health professionals. She has also served on a number of national committees, most importantly as a member of the Advisory Board for the National Institutes of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, serving as a member of the FDA Drug Safety and Risk Management Board. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and an elected member of the American Medical Association, the leading association of medical scientists in the United States.

Gabriel in particular comes to ASU with a history of strong collaboration within the university. Mayo During her tenure as dean of her clinic, she worked closely with her College of Health Solutions and EdPlus to develop and launch the new Mayo Medical School in Arizona, bringing her MS/ Incorporated certificate and MD/MS program. These innovative programs introduce Mayo medical students to principles of health system design and engineering, health economics, leadership and management, with the goal of optimizing health care delivery and health outcomes for all.
