Nationwide Initiative Helps Fund Scholarships and Helps Minority Students Pursue Educational Endeavors

Lexington, Kentucky (WTVQ) – Over the next few weeks, thousands will participate in a series of walks sponsored by the National Black College Foundation.
The goal is to support historically black colleges and universities.

In Lexington, one of those walks started early Saturday morning. Dozens roamed the neighborhood as part of the UNCF Walk for Education.

A nationwide initiative helps raise scholarship funding to help minority students pursue their educational endeavors.

“In short, it is about investing in our children, the next generation. Historically, Black Colleges and PWIs have all benefited from the efforts and funds raised by the UNCF. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to come together to make a positive impact on the lives of our next generation,” said Pastor Richard Gaines of the United Baptist Church, which hosted the walk.

Saturday’s walk is a first for the Lexington community. City, education and spiritual leaders were all present.
Participants said it was important for the community to be aware of the opportunities the organization offers.

“Take advantage of the resources and make sure you do it. There are many opportunities for college funding, like the United Negro College Fund. There is space for you and you are important,” McDaniel said.

Participants say they are already looking to develop these initiatives further each year.
