Hattiesburg, Mississippi (WDAM) – Physicians from across Mississippi met with medical students from William Cary University for the first-ever conference on rural health care.

Organizers of the inaugural Rural Health Summit at WCU hope to improve care in areas such as diabetes and mental health.

The event started on Friday night and ended on Saturday afternoon.

“Most of our states are rural, and the problems we face in rural America are different than the problems we face in urban areas, so it’s important to set the table for these kinds of conversations.” Italo Subbarao, Dean, of WCU’s School of Osteopathic Medicine.

At the summit, presentations were given by various doctors. Over 10 different presentations and workshops were held during the event.

“Whether you’re learning about differences in health care or socioeconomic status, I think all of these factors play a huge role in health care. That’s what we learned here during the summit.” Monica Daswani said.

A hands-on workshop was also included.

“We’re really headed in the same direction. It’s not just William Cary and community providers,” said David Bise, a state health expert at Mississippi State University Extension Services. We’re all just together.”

Among those most likely to benefit from the summit are future physicians like WCU student Andres Saucedo.

“That’s one of the things you learn about it in books,” Saucedo says. “It’s another thing to hear it from practitioners saying, ‘These are the challenges we face in our community.'”
