QUINCY (WGEM) – The school strives to cover most items for teachers, but sometimes budgets cannot cover all essentials.

The Quincy Public Schools Foundation provides grants to school district teachers, staff, and administrators to help those looking to add something to their child’s learning experience.

Program coordinator Faith Mountain said support for these grants comes from donors and sponsors looking to help teachers with their projects. She said the grant can be used for a variety of items teachers request in the classroom, including technology-related items such as coding and robotics, as well as physical education-related items.

“These grants are very important because normally tax money is only used for school foundations. That’s your textbook, make sure everyone has a table and chairs. But , these grants allow teachers to provide additional opportunities to truly engage their students, and to provide them with additional opportunities to stand out from the rest.” said Mr. Mountain.

Mountain said 15 applications have been submitted to date for various projects. She said they expected more submissions.

Jody Steinke, principal of Quincy High School, said grants like this are great for their school and others.

He said they do a good job of providing teachers with what they need for their classrooms. I said that the subsidy was very valuable because I would be able to get it out.

“We have some math teachers who have asked us to use iPads to interact with them. We could afford a big board, but we couldn’t afford an iPad, and the foundation is looking to support them,” Steinke said.

He also said that economics teachers have received support from the foundation to give students real-world experience, starting their own businesses as a project.

Steinke said the grant will be very helpful for teachers to pursue further academic goals and provide educational opportunities for students.
