Monroe County Chief Executive Adam Bello today joined Monroe County Assistant Sheriff Corey Brown, District Attorney Sandra Doory, Medical Inspector Dr. Honoring the men and women of the Crime Laboratory (MCCL) and Monroe County Medical Inspectors. For your excellent work supporting public safety. Last week was National Forensics Week. Now in its 10th year, National Forensic Science Week recognizes forensic contributions to the criminal justice system and celebrates academic programs, forensic professionals, and scientific research in various forensic disciplines.

“Monroe County’s crime lab and coroner’s office play an important role in my administration’s focus on public safety.” County executive Bello said“Our forensic team analyzes thousands of crime scene-related evidence each year and works with law enforcement and the district attorney’s office to keep violent criminals off the streets. It doesn’t get talked about much, but it’s as important to the criminal justice system as it is to law enforcement and the justice system in keeping Monroe County safe.”

The Monroe County Crime Institute provides analytical, scientific, and other forensic and administrative support to law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Founded in 1961, MCCL is a regional forensic laboratory serving the City of Rochester, Monroe, Genesee, and Livingston counties. In 2021, 29 crime labs will analyze 10,299 evidence samples, work on 117 arson cases, 75 homicide cases, link a firearm to a shooting or multiple shootings, and identify 933 cases in the National Integrated Ballistics Network. led the investigation of The Monroe County Crime Lab has added two full-time positions in the Firearms Division and one full-time position in the Narcotics & Narcotics Division in response to increased workload resulting from increased violence in the area.

The Coroner’s Office works with the Crime Lab and the District Attorney’s Office on homicide cases to assist state and local agencies that rely on reports to evaluate deaths pending review by various offices. In 2021, the agency investigated her 4,259 deaths, conducted 1,158 tests, and ruled 94 deaths murder. Each murder case requires you to meet with a lawyer and appear in court to obtain testimony before the trial. For civil cases, the office will provide the required affidavits. Two full-time forensic pathologists were added to the coroner’s office this year to handle the increased workload. This will be the first time in 12 years that the coroner’s office is fully staffed.

“We thank the Monroe County Crime Institute and the Monroe County Coroner’s Office for their expertise.” Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter said:“In 2022, the City of Rochester will see a 150% increase in gun violence deaths compared to its five-year average (2017-2021). We leave the staff of these two organizations to absorb the additional workload: we provide superior scientific analysis of forensic evidence so that families can properly mourn their loved ones. I would like to thank the men and women in our crime lab and coroner’s office for making this possible.”
