BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WIAT) — A new year full of possibilities and new beginnings, many are itching to know what lies ahead.
On Alabama politics, CBS42 political analyst Steve Flowers said Gov. Kay Ivey and the state legislature may have a few different cards in store for next year’s mandate.
Although Governor Ivey has kept his future agenda a secret, Flowers says she will be the “education governor” next term. He says the state’s education budget should fully complement her intentions.
“So education costs money,” said Flowers. “Now what she wants to do with education is spend money on the community in her college system.”
Flowers says our state could benefit greatly by giving more people the opportunity to train in a job such as plumbing, welding, or manufacturing.
“We need education money to train people for these jobs. , hopefully that will be what she sees.”
He also says that Alabama, including those who are more conservative, really want the right to vote in the lottery.
Flowers says a special session is needed to address that issue along with gambling and the governor must endorse it for change to occur.
“They’ve now realized we’re gambling in this state,” Flowers said. We also recognize that we shouldn’t.Indian casinos have a federal monopoly. They are not controlled by the state.”
“So people in Alabama want state income from these gambling locations as well. It needs to be a comprehensive gambling issue, not just the lottery.”
Governor Ivey’s inauguration will take place on Jan. 16, and while she may be hinting at her main duties there, Flowers says she and the Alabama legislature will have to wait until the regular session begins in March. Say you probably don’t know the main problem you’re trying to tackle.
