Newswise — Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL) popular lecture series “Science on Saturday” runs from February 4th to February 25th.

The new location for the lecture series will be held at the Mertes Theater, Building 4000, Las Positas College, 3000 Campus Hill Dr., Livermore.

The series will begin on February 4th and will offer four different lectures on the theme of “70 Years of Science”. Each lecture is conducted by a leading his LLNL researcher attended by high school science teachers.

Presentations are for middle and high school students and are offered every Saturday in February at 10:00 am. Tours of the Las Positas campus are available on a first-come, first-served basis following presentations at 11:15 AM and 11:30 AM. serve base.

• February 4 – “Bringing Star Power to Earth: Harnessing Nuclear Fusion” Presented by LLNL scientists Dave Schlossberg and Derek Mariscal and Granada High School teacher Tom Shefler. This presentation will provide an overview of the fusion science in action at the National Ignition Facility, including experiments, simulations, and the application of machine learning to better understand the physics of highly complex physical phenomena. • February 11 – “Small Algae, Big World: Impact of Microalgae on the Global Carbon Cycle and Sustainable Biofuels”Presented by LLNL researchers Xavier Mayali and Ty Samo and Tracy High School biology teacher Erin McKay. This presentation will introduce the audience to the fascinating world of microalgae and describe some of the research on this topic being conducted at LLNL. Click here for more information.
• From February 18th “Supersizing Computing: 70 Years of HPC” LLNL scientist Jane Herrimann and Tracy High School teacher Erin McKay presented again. This talk will discuss the increasing power of supercomputing, some of the changes that have made these machines faster, and improvements to be expected in the future. • From February 25th “3D Printing: From Imagination to Reality” Presented by LLNL scientists Eric Duos, Julie Mancini, Monica Moya, Dominic Porcincula, William Smith, Chris Spadaccini, Rebecca Walton, and former Alamo Elementary School principal Stan Hitomi. This presentation covers several aspects of 3D printing technology, including the design process, raw material creation, and product performance testing at LLNL. Click here for more information.
