Eastham — The 11th Annual Science in the Seashore Symposium will be held on September 15th at the Cape Cod National Seashore Salt Pond Visitor Center.

The annual event brings together science and education to see the technological sciences of the coast. Findings help park staff and their users to understand national park resources and to manage, conserve and protect them.

The event is free and open to the public. The program features a diverse group of scientists and academics who share nature and cultural research projects that they conduct within the seashore.

Seven A short presentation will be given and the audience will have time to ask questions.

Learn Science Behind the National Seashore

Researchers discuss findings about how coastal salt marshes capture and store carbon for sequestration. Researchers from the Coastal Research Center discuss the genetic diversity of gray seals.

Attendees will learn about Truro’s East Harbor and how it has transformed from a true harbor to a salt marsh lagoon to a freshwater pond. The Park Service has been exploring options to restore tidal flow to water bodies.

The Atlantic Research and Learning Center on Cape Cod National Seashore is one of 17 research and learning centers in the national park system. Jeffrey Saunders, Seashore’s director of natural resource management and science, calls the symposium a way to engage with the public, colleagues and the scientific community.
