Iowa Libertarian Rick Stewart Talks Psychedelics, Education

Libertarian Rick Stewart pitched a wide range of pitches for the gubernatorial campaign at the Iowa State Fair, including legalizing psychedelics, repealing government mandates, and returning the “one-room schoolhouse” school system. .
“Whether you know it or not, almost everyone is a libertarian,” he said. “Because libertarian means you are free. You are free to do what you want when you don’t prevent others from doing what they want.”
Stewart addressed the crowd, including some of his grandchildren among supporters of the Des Moines Register Political Soapbox.
His biggest problem, he said, is ending the war on drugs and making psychedelics available for treatment. I was. After his arrest, he temporarily suspended his campaign, but decided to continue his candidacy.
“If I were the governor, I would legalize it in Iowa and I don’t care what the federal government says,” he said.
Stewart also spoke about the need to change Iowa’s education system to give it more parental control. Stewart wants Iowa to return to a “one-room school” model where parents can directly choose their child’s teachers.
“Let’s go back to what used to work,” he said. “All we have to do is copy what we used to do.”
Stewart has previously run for office in other Iowas, with incumbent Republican Governor Kim Reynolds and Democrat Deidre Deger running for the premier Iowa office. His Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll in July said his 5% of midterm voters planned to support Stewart.

In an interview with The Register, Stewart said he plans to continue spreading the word about his campaign through parades, radio and television ads and billboards.
He also gained new popularity from RAGBRAI, which offered free gin and tonics to bike riders, he said.
“I dare say I could have been the king of RAGBRAI,” he said.
