Fox 2 – Detroit designer Quandell Wright expresses his creativity every day from his home studio.

This is the protagonist of his latest collection, the pyramid-shaped handbag “Amore”. However, success in the competitive fashion design industry was not easy.

“I started sketching when I was eight years old. I was sketching clothes and shoes,” said Q.

Q loved to style, but having been raised by a single mother on the west side of Detroit, money was tight. And children were cruel.

“Kids are bullies. They don’t really understand everyone’s situation,” he said. “So I thought I would make my own clothes. Anyway, I don’t want to be like everyone else. They all look the same.”

That ignited Q’s passion. He taught himself how to redesign jeans and his T-shirts using different colors, patterns, materials and machines. He remembers selling his first six of his T-shirts.

Shaped like a pyramid, the Amore handbag stands out in Q’s latest fashion line.

“When I saw that kind of money, I thought, No one can pay like you, like my pops always told me.”

At the time, Q was working as a janitor and returned everything he sold to William Palmer, but he wanted more.

“Oh, Kanye’s situation, it’s a bold move,” he said.

In 2020, Q flew to Wyoming and walked four hours to hip-hop star and designer Kanye West’s ranch in hopes of landing an internship at his fashion empire, Yeezy.

“I was crying. I got these signs, my backpack. I’m like I’m in the middle of this desert,” he said. Standing at the ranch, I had these two big signs that showed who I was, why I was there, and what I wanted to achieve.

With no response from Kanye, Q was forced to turn back and go home.

But he didn’t give up. He says he started breaking fashion laws. Celebrities like Chris Brown began wearing his clothes, William his Palmer began collaborating with brands such as his K-Swiss, and his fashion-forward bags were spotted in magazines.

The 34-year-old hopes to one day open a store on Woodward Avenue, but in the meantime, he enjoys supporting his family’s designs and wants to inspire other young designers. thinking about.
