Maekong Mental Health Matters (MMHM) conducts classes on youth mental health to teach people how to recognize the signs and provide prompt and effective care. Classes are free, but you must register first. Space is limited, so please register early by clicking here.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid class is a two-part class for those who have teenagers, work with teenagers, or need future skills. The class is made possible through the Southern Center for Choice Theory thanks to a grant from Fort Valley State University Values.It is divided into two sessions and participants are required to attend both. It will take place on Friday, September 16th and Friday, September 23rd from 9am to 1pm. Both are held in the Chambers of City Hall (700 Poplar Street).

MMHM Coordinator Andrea Cook said, “Identifying the signs of mental health problems in young people increases the chances of resolving the trauma experienced by young people.” Barriers to support young people will be removed!

The training was conducted by Andrea Cooke and Jarvis Adside and includes:

• Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
• Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
• How to deal with at-risk children and adolescents.
• how to connect youth to help; and
• Expanded content on trauma, substance use, self-care, and the impact of social media and bullying.

Attendees include teachers, school staff, coaches, camp counselors, youth group leaders, parents, and all adults working with youth.
