Moscow, Idaho — An expansion of the fellowship program across three Idaho universities places two scientists in Idaho government agencies, bringing their scientific expertise to policy making.

The Idaho Science and Technology Policy Fellowship (ISTPF) places scientists, social scientists, and engineers in state government to help shape policy while applying their knowledge and skills to address the most pressing challenges facing Idaho. A non-partisan program to learn first-hand about The third-year fellowship is a partnership of Boise State University, Idaho State University, and the University of Idaho. The U of I’s McClure Center for Public Policy Research is his leader in the program.

New Fellows Dr. Anna Briggs and Dr. Sarah Maher started their fellowships in late August. Briggs spends a year of fellowship in her office with the Idaho Legislative Service, and Maher with the Idaho Fish and Game Service. This is the first year that ISTPF has placed fellows in the Legal Affairs Bureau. Previously, fellows have been placed at the Governor’s Office of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Governor’s Office of Species Conservation, the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, and the Idaho STEM Action Center.

Briggs holds a PhD in Entomology from the University of Idaho, and a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Zoology and Veterinary Medicine. Her research focused on vector diseases, studying the biological factors that influence malaria parasite transmission.

Maher is a multidisciplinary researcher with expertise in magnetics research and data analysis. She holds a PhD in Earth Science from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, an MS in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a BS in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Victoria.
