University of Alabama Celebrates Fashion Facility at Drummond Lyon Hall

A new state-of-the-art fashion and design facility will soon open on the University of Alabama campus.
UA faculty, students and alumni gathered on the lawn of Doster Hall on Friday to celebrate the development of Drummond Lyon Hall. This hall brings together the fashion retail and apparel design of the University of Human and Environmental Sciences.
Drummond Lyon Hall is named after 1986 classmate Terry Drummond Lyon. This is in recognition of her support for the upcoming building on Colonial Drive.

Upon completion of construction, the new fashion and design facility will include a preservation laboratory, an exhibition gallery, two state-of-the-art studio classrooms, receptions or lectures and offices for fashion retail and apparel design faculty.
Stuart Usdun, President of the University of Human and Environmental Sciences, said:
“[Drummond Lyon Hall] It will be a great space for students to learn the art and business of apparel design and fashion retail, and for visitors to showcase fashion from vintage to contemporary,” said Usdan.
The 25,000-square-foot building will be part of the hub of the University of Human and Environmental Sciences, which includes nearby Adams and Doster Halls.
Ousdun said the design of the Drummond Lyon Hall was deliberately chosen to resemble Doster Hall.
“We wanted to keep something similar to Doster Hall, the home of our university. When it was finally finished, you could see this from O’Surlin Lucy Hall, overlooking Colonial Drive, and its extension It looks like Doster and we are very excited about it,” said Usudan.
UA President Stuart R. Bell said the university is looking forward to welcoming students to the new fashion and design facility once the project is complete. According to Bell, the construction of the Drummond Lyon Hall he plans to complete in July 2023.
“Drummond Lyon Hall affirms that the college will continue to be a national leader among colleges preparing students for Alabama,” Bell said.
In a February news release, UA said Drummond Lyon Hall stands out when compared to apparel design and fashion merchandising programs offered at other Southeastern Conference schools. The facility has dedicated spaces for apparel protection and spaces for hands-on learning and symposium-style events for the fashion and retail industries.
