A renowned special education school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side has moved to Sunset Park.
The International Brain Institute, better known as iBrain, was founded in 2018 by Patrick Donahue. His mission was to improve his daughter’s education.
“She was rocked by a baby nurse when she was just five days old, breaking four ribs and both collarbones and causing severe brain damage,” Donahue said. “She’s 17 now, and although she can’t walk on her own yet, she will. Part of her mission to change the world is to create a world-class education.” ”
Schools are focused on ensuring that these children’s learning experiences are not impeded by their disabilities.
“This is a very special school for people with severe disabilities. This is the most intense program that exists anywhere in the world,” said Donahue. “Every student is accompanied by a one-on-one paraprofessional throughout her day.”
Donohue’s commitment to iBrain accessibility is clear. The only out-of-pocket cost for families to participate in the program is a refundable $100 deposit.
Students participate in a variety of activities and support services that help develop cognitive, educational and social skills. Donohue says the goal is to expand to all five of his boroughs.
