America has a migrant crisis. Hundreds of thousands of migrants have been streaming to the border, fleeing from oppressive poverty, endemic gang violence and failed governments, in search of asylum. The federal government has dropped the ball not only on dealing with the sheer number of migrants but also with enacting any measure of legislative reform that may ease the crisis.
The fed plan seems to be to call on the states to pick up the slack. New York received more than 100,000 migrants and is currently housing around 58,000 of them. An earlier version of Gov. Phil Murphy’s position on the issue seemed amenable to offering a helping hand. He declared New Jersey a “sanctuary state” but when the feds came knocking last week he turned off the lights and pretended he wasn’t home.
